Pre-conception Planning
Pre-conception planning truly is a lost art. It goes far beyond “quit smoking, cut alcohol, and take a prenatal”.
A few years ago I discovered Dr.Weston A Price's work. He's often called “the Isaac Newton of nutrition”. Dr.Price traveled the world studying traditional cultures. In 1939, he published Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, detailing his travels studying the diets and nutrition of various cultures. Dr.Price found that many women in traditional cultures would prepare for pregnancy 6 months to 1 year in advance. Reproduction was not entered into casually as it often is today, as babies were necessary for the community’s long term survival. This was reflected in the health of the communities - with none of the issues or complications you see today.
Now, we just pop a pill. A big danger with the prenatal is the psychological effect. To many, it implies the nutrition issue has been addressed, when that is not the case.
Prenatals partially address the issue of nutrient deficiency, but they do NOTHING to address actual diet. What you eat matters. Diet and lifestyle affect gene quality and pregnancy outcomes.
Additionally, many women have no idea that prenatal nutrition works best when implemented before conception. Nutrient stores play a critical role in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy as it is the most fundamental time of development. Food programs gene. We should replenish our bodies with nutrition that facilitates optimal gene expression. Genetic wealth is a priceless gift.
Artificial vitamins and powdered antioxidant products are not as effective as the real thing. Synthetic vitamins are a step up from no vitamins, but they are a sad replacement for real food.
Let’s get back to our root, truly nourish, and tap into our innate wisdom. Intentional nutrition makes all the difference!
